The definition card
What the card shows when you tap a word — and how to dig deeper.
Tap a word and a card slides up. Here's what to look at, and what each part is for.
What you see first
The card opens with a definition from WordNet, the dictionary Lupa carries with it. No network, no waiting — even on a plane or in a basement, the first definition is there. Each entry shows the part of speech, the meaning, and a pronunciation guide.
If a word has more than one sense, they're listed in order.
Pull down for Lupa AI
WordNet tells you what a word means in general. Lupa AI tells you what it means here, in the sentence you're reading.
Pull the card down a little and Lupa reads the words around your selection, then writes a definition tailored to the passage. Useful for idioms, technical jargon, archaic usage, and words with several common meanings where context matters.
Free Lupa includes 10 Lupa AI lookups a day. Premium removes the limit.
Tap any word to keep going
The definition itself is alive. Tap any word inside it and a new card stacks on top — same word, new lookup. Useful when a definition uses a word you also don't know. Swipe the top card away to return to the previous one.
Hear it pronounced
Tap the speaker icon to hear the word read aloud. Choose between British and American voices, male or female, in Settings. Pronunciation is a Premium feature.
